The Biometric Technologies Laboratory (BTLab) recently organized a workshop titled "Producing Top-Quality Research", bringing together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members to share practical insights on conducting, publishing, and presenting high-impact research. Originally envisioned as a training session, the event evolved into a vibrant exchange of ideas that reflected the lab's strong spirit of collegiality, professionalism, and mutual support.
Inspired by the recent achievements of BTLab researchers across multiple fronts and guided by Dr. Marina Gavrilova, the workshop featured a series of presentations covering the complete research journey—from getting started in research to publishing at top-tier AI venues and effectively communicating scientific contributions.
MSc student Rafsan Kabir and PhD student Md Shopon delivered a session on strategies for publishing research in leading AI conferences, sharing their experiences and practical recommendations for writing competitive papers accepted at top-tier venues such as CVPR. Md Shopon also presented a second session on best practices in scientific writing, discussing effective paper organization, presenting technical contributions clearly, and avoiding common pitfalls during manuscript preparation.
Postdoctoral researcher Dr. Pedro Paiva introduced participants to the fundamentals of academic research, providing guidance on selecting impactful research topics, conducting comprehensive literature reviews, and identifying suitable publication venues. His session offered valuable direction for students beginning their research journey.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of effective research communication beyond publications. MSc student Mahmudul Haque shared practical strategies for designing award-winning academic posters, drawing on his recent experience of receiving a Best Poster Award at the C3SE conference in Montreal. Artemy Gavrilov concluded the technical sessions by discussing the art of delivering engaging and impactful conference presentations, offering practical techniques for communicating research effectively to diverse audiences.
The workshop provided valuable guidance for both new and experienced researchers while celebrating the recent successes of BTLab members. More importantly, it fostered an environment of collaboration, inspiration, and shared learning, reinforcing BTLab's commitment to research excellence and supporting the next generation of researchers.
