In November 2024, Prof. Marina Gavrilova had one of the most meaningful and engaging experiences of my career as a keynote speaker at IEEE Southern Alberta Section Annual Meeting. It was extra special as it was facilitated Andrei Gavrilov, who serves as a IEEE Southern Alberta Section Vice Chair. The keynote "Trust and Social Justice in the Era of Generative AI" tracked how BTLab research on biometric security evolved from utilizing pattern recognition to the design of intelligent algorithms able to simulate behavior of complex systems. With advancements in deep learning and natural language processing dominating multiple spheres of our life, and unprecedented abilities for personal information tracking, the focus is now shifting to protecting privacy of individuals, enhancing trust in decision making and minimizing bias in AI-based systems used finance, education, and health.
